Taste of Home Cooking School brings taste of fall to Geneva's home cooks

Afternoon Cooking

The Booker T Washington National Monument had an 1863 Harvest Day celebration on Saturday. The monument celebrates the life and accomplishments of Dr. Booker T Washington, an educator, author, orator and presidential advisor. Dr. Washington was born into slavery on this working farm in 1856 and remained a slave until emancipation in 1865 when he was 9 years old.

These ladies were demonstrating and explaining the function of the kitchen on this farm during the civil war era at harvest time. It was 65 F outside and inside this small building they had built a roaring cooking fire. It was at least 95 or 100 F in the building. The change in temperature walking from the outside into the building was somewhat stunning. These ladies had 5 pots over, in and around the fire cooking dishes like chicken, cale, squash and apple pie. It smelled marvelous!

Houston Chef's Table: Extraordinary Recipes From The Bayou City'S Iconic Restaurants

Houston is the dining out capital of Texas, with a food scene that reflects the city itself—talented, entrepreneurial, diverse, and quite modern. Barbeque and Tex-Mex are certainly present, but do not define the dining experience. Modern American cuisine brought into focus by Mark Cox of Mark’s American Cuisine and fine-dining Italian style served by award-winning Tony’s both set the stage for a dining experience independent of Texas’ reputation for big steaks and enchiladas. Mallett previously served in a variety of business development consulting positions for notable firms Gerson Lehrman Group, PetCareRX and Quadranet Systems, Inc. She regularly advised executive team members regarding the business planning, sales strategy, new market penetration, positioning and other sales operations.

Prior to her consulting roles, Mallett served as the Director of Business Development for International Markets for OpenTable, Inc., a real-time online consumer reservation provider. Mallett’s responsibilities included the execution of sales strategy initiatives, the development of regional sales teams and the development of joint venture partner relationships within international and domestic markets. She was one of the initial key sales resources assisting OpenTable to realize explosive growth during the mid to late 2000s and consistently in the top 5% of sales producers for the company. Additionally, she was directly responsible for the development of various international markets, in particular Mexico, which realized well over 250% annual growth from 2006 to 2010 and an additional 165% growth in 2011. For her restaurant industry involvement in Mexico via OpenTable, Mallett received outstanding recognition awards from La Asociacion Mexicana de Restaurantes in 2006, and from the Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Restaurantes y Alimentos Condimentados (CANIRAC) in 2008.

Prior to OpenTable, Mallett was the Regional Sales Account Executive for Rewards Network Inc., a national dining rewards program provider. During her time with Rewards Network, Mallett successfully enhanced market growth for region by upgrading the sales team and augmenting the portfolio of clients, and was honored with the Top National Sales Award in 2002 and 2003.

“I am excited to be joining RRT and pleased to be supporting the sales and business development team efforts for an organization so remarkably committed to consistently striving for the highest level of client satisfaction,” Mallett said. “I am confident that with the right sales strategy and execution in place that supports the financial and operational growth plan, RRT will expand its industry footprint and converge on fulfilling its vision to make takeout ordering a more robust, efficient and profitable solution for restaurants.”

Mallett will work closely with RRT’s CEO and sales team members to develop new client and partner relationships as well as support and maintain existing relationships.

“On behalf of RRT, we are very pleased to welcome Sally as a part of the team. Her impeccable reputation and unique sales, business development and customer loyalty program experience, especially with OpenTable and Rewards Network, is very well-suited for our organization,” said David Schofield, CEO of RRT. “Having her based in Texas is particularly beneficial for RRT with the high concentration of restaurant corporate headquarters located throughout the state. Sally’s addition advances our penetration within the restaurant industry, strengthens our sales team efforts and extends our brand nationally.”

Craig Middleton pens fantasy fiction of epic proportions

VICTORIA, Australia (PRWEB) October 01, 2014

The impulse to write as with many writers was spontaneous for first time author Craig Middleton. Out of nowhere, he got the urge to inspire children and older people with fantasy. His idea being: What if musical notes could contain a deep and powerful magic, which if truly understood, could wield great good or evil. His fantasy fiction “Mysteries Of Llanagog,” (published by Xlibris AU) is a very old story blended with very unique ingredients.

Curled up in bed shaking with fear and cold, Rachel’s world looked like it was about to fall apart. The British Isles were in the grip of the Second World War and the streets in which she played were a pile of rubble. Her parents were glad to see the back of her and so it seemed like a pleasant dream when she had arrived in the Welsh village of Llanagog and was rescued by Lavender Jones.

Rachel has only just escaped the Nazi bombings of London when she arrives in Llanagog and stumbles across a mystical dragon called Charlotte. The local land owner Cunningham Leeks is set to destroy Charlotte as she stands in his road. Rachel is soon caught up in a battle of good versus evil that will not only change the course of life for all in Llanagog but may change the course of the entire war.

“I think ‘Mysteries of Llanagog’ is unique. I spent many hours researching about dragon legends, spy organizations, strange inventions and other materials before combining facts with fiction. The characters in the story are three dimensional so that you actually find yourself caring for what happens. It is a fast-paced story that engages the reader,” the author said.

About the Author

Born in 1964 in a small town near London, Craig Middleton would escape the stresses of home and school life by taking off into the woods to build camps and explore. He became interested in cooking, at first just to earn pocket money then later as a career and a creative outlet. After working in a couple of local kitchens, the bright lights of London called. Here he received his first formal training. The kitchens of Mayfair, Belgravia, Soho and London held many adventures and highlights. Having conquered this field, Middleton felt he needed new adventures. He headed to Australia where he has been living happily since 1991. The impulse to write as with many writers was spawned by a desire to inspire his children. That is why Rachel is a central figure in this particular book.
